9/4/04 - EK764 JNB-DXB was cleared to takeoff from Johannesburg's 4,420m (14,500 feet) runway 21R. The crew used 'reduced flexible thrust' for takeoff. Following the rotate call, the pilot applied rearward side-stick and, for approximately 6-7s the aircraft nose did not move upwards. When the nose finally rose, the pilot selected 9 nose-up. The Airbus reached the end of the runway and continued past the end of the runway. TOGA power was selected and the aircraft became airborne some 150m (500 feet) past the end of the runway. The aircraft struck lighting, causing damage to the aircraft, but returned immediately and landed safely. However, at a speed of 70kt (130km/h) the brakes failed. Flight 764 came to a halt just before the runway end.
